A sleepy little fishing village just 50 years ago, Benidorm has developed into one of Spain's most well known and loved holiday resorts. Stretching 3 miles along the coast, it offers two main sandy beaches: Poniente, which is west of the old town and Playa De Levante, where the main concentration of hotels is. These beaches are wide and sandy but can become very crowded in high season. An attractive promenade runs along both. Entertainments in the resort include Terra Mitica (Mythical Land), a huge theme park with rides, shows and interactive games, which is a haven for families. However, it is in the evenings that Benidorm really comes to life with dozens of discos, innumerable bars and shows creating a vibrant atmopshere. It is no wonder that people flock here again and again for the abundant nightlife. The most famous of the aforementioned shows is at the Benidorm Palace. The entertainment here lasts for 3 hours and includes Spanish dancers and flamenco, magicians and jugglers with a live dance band/orchestra playing in between each act. Dinner can also be taken here if you wish. One of Spain's largest casinos, The Costa Blanca Casino, can be found between Benidorm and Villajoyosa.
Benidorm is lucky enough to enjoy long hot summers with temperatures regularly around 27 degrees celsius in August, and mild winters with temperatures of around 12 degrees celsius in December and January. This makes it an all-year round resort which is never really without tourists - though the people who visit in summer are decidedly different from those who holiday in the winter! Summer attracts hordes of young singles, lively couples and families attracted by the sandy beaches, wide array of entertainments and eateries with a British feel. From November to April the over 55 age group takes over and the nightlife centres on dancing and shows.

Opening hours for shops in Benidorm tend to be 9:30 or 10:00 am until 1:30pm and afternoons from 4:30pm until 8:30pm (these can change). Most supermarkets open all day until 8:00pm. The nearby village of Finestrat is home to the Marina Shopping Centre and the Carrefour Hypermarket, which is open from 10:00am until 10:00pm and sells everything from wines and spirits to household wares. The Carrefour Hypermarket also has lots of restaurants and bars so you can have a rest in between bargain hunting. Finestrat can be easily reached by taking the number 12 bus which runs every half hour. Benidorm outdoor market is another firm favourite with shoppers. This takes place on Wednesdays and Sundays from 09:00am until 2:00pm next to the Hotel Pueblo. There are still some wine cellars, known as Bodegas, in the Rincon de Loix area, although these are fast disappearing due to increasing competition. Fans of Lladro will be pleased to know that there are an abundance of shops selling this famous porcelain in the Avenida Mediterraneo. And for the smokers among you, Spain is now the cheapest EEC country for cigarettes, cigars and tobacco.
